A single approval can empty your Solana wallet. The mechanism is simple: a dApp asks for permission to move a specific token from your address, and if you grant it, that dApp can transfer those tokens without asking you again. No signature required.
Drainers exploit this. They trick you into approving unlimited token access, then they take everything.
How the token approval system works
On Solana, when you interact with a dApp, it may request "token transfer authority." This is a specific permission that allows the dApp to move a defined token from your wallet. Once approved, the dApp can execute transfers on your behalf; you do not need to sign each individual transaction.
The permission applies until you revoke it. It is not limited to one-time use. Bad actors design their requests to appear legitimate, wanting you to approve without reading.
How drainers trick you
Three common methods exist, and each relies on you approving a malicious request.
Fake airdrop claim sites. A drainer creates a site that looks like a legitimate airdrop claim page. It might use the name of a known project. You connect your wallet. The site asks you to approve a token transfer to "claim" the airdrop, but the permission it requests is unlimited, and once approved, the drainer moves your tokens.
Counterfeit dApp clones. Scammers copy the interface of a real dApp. The fake site looks identical. You think you are approving a standard interaction. In reality, the approval gives the drainer full authority over a token.
Social engineering. A scammer contacts you via Discord, Telegram, or X, claims to be support, and says your wallet needs "verification" or a "reset." They send a link that requests token approval. The drainer then waits for you to sign.
Checking active token approvals
You can see which dApps have permission to move your tokens. Two methods work.
Using Solscan. Go to solscan.io, enter your wallet address, and click the "Token Approvals" tab. This shows all active approvals: you will see the token, the amount allowed (often unlimited), and the dApp address that has permission. As of August 31, 2026, this method works for any Solana wallet.
Using wallet settings. Phantom and Solflare both offer built-in approval viewers. In Phantom, open settings, go to "Security & Privacy," and select "Token Approvals." Solflare has a similar section under "Settings" and "Permissions." These show the same data as Solscan.
How to revoke token approvals
Revocation is straightforward. Once you find an approval you want to remove, click "Revoke" or "Remove." A transaction will be sent; it costs a small SOL fee - typically a few thousand lamports. The approval is then gone.
Revoke all approvals you do not recognize, any unlimited approval, and approvals for dApps you no longer use.
Critical preventive measure
The only reliable protection is checking what you sign. Before you approve any transaction, look at what permissions it requests. Specifically, check the "token transfer authority" field.
If a transaction requests unlimited token approval, do not sign it. Legitimate dApps rarely request this; most ask for limited amounts, and some ask for none.
A drainer will try to hide this information. They rely entirely on you clicking "Approve" without reading. Do not do that.
